Description

Now for the third part I will talk about the modern Prussian state in the form of how Prussia would fair currently in our world. After the Soviet Era where Prussia served as the USSR's attack/spy dog and the Baltic war where it attempted to protect its own trade routes, Prussia would enjoy some relative peace, if seen as an outsider in Europe as with nations like Russia/Belarus/Serbia etc.

Flag Dissection:

The modern flag of Prussia uses the plain Black and White flag that was the civil flag of Prussia and the flag of the East Prussia:

The Prussian monarchist eagle tends to appear in state emblems, but without any of the regal features such as crowns and swords to symbolize Prussia's republican nature.

Political Geography:

The capital of Prussia is Kongisberg, which in this timeline never gets called Kaliningrad. It is a major port city and the center of Prussia's economy as Prussia primarily relies on trade of local amber deposits, ship building, and transport of resources in the Baltic, usually from the EU nations to Russia and Belarus. It's population is the largest in Prussia at roughly 800 thousand and it's a free trade zone in Prussia to encourage exports and investment, much to some eyebrow raising from the hardliner communists. Thus, Konigsberg is a pretty rich city, although Prussia's somewhat China styled economy that stil relies on some degree of central planning and high trade unionization have limited potential investors from America and Britain in Kaliningrad. The free trade also means that income taxes are high in Prussia in order to fund public and welfare services and that money has to be made by letting Russia keep its Baltic fleet there in exchange for money and protection.

Prussia's other largest cities are Sovetsk and Allenstein at roughly 300 thousand each, which are also pretty rich not due to a free trade zone, but rather numerous service industries that are popular in the Baltic for their efficiency. Income taxes here are lower, but consumer taxes and tariffs are much higher to protect Prussian industry. The rest of Prussia's population are concentrated in the villages to the south which tend to have populations in the few tens of thousands or small towns at populations reaching, but almost never exceeding, 100 thousand. However, there may be a sort of "flight" to the larger cities or villages due to low economic opportunities in the towns as the larger cities have service industries and the villages tend to have lots of jobs in relation to amber.

Prussia shares borders only Poland and Lithuania, but through a treaty, allows free trade to occur in a region in southern Lithuania so that Prussia may reach Russia through Belarus via CIS agreement. Prussia shares maritime borders with Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. Prussians can also freely move into the city of Gdansk, which they still sometimes call Danzig just to annoy Poles, and that city acts as the main forum of Prussian and Polish cultural exchange even if can be rather quippy.

Physical Geography:

The Baltic Sea pretty much dominates Prussian life and has given rise to numerous port cities. This is especially important when one considers that Prussia's ports are generally ice free and can help distribute goods from the snow capped northern European nations. This port city was widely used by the CIS due to its climate during the Soviet era as Russia can get infamously cold and thus has to somewhat act as a free trade zone.

Pregel is the largest river within the nation formed by the smaller Inster and Angerapp rivers. These rivers are often fun places for tourists and locals alike to bike across. Prussia of course also shares the Frischess Haff and Kurisches Haff lagoons with Poland and Lithuania, surrounded by what kinda looks like land bridges from a map.

Prussia's climate is largely cool and moderate in the winter if cloudy, and mild, if warm, in summer. Thus, Prussia is a pretty damp place to be in. It does snow however in the winters and shining suns and 30*C temperatures DO exist alongside the rains in the summer. Cue jokes from other Germans that the weather is what drives Prussians to be so militaristic and aggressive all the time.

Demographics:

Prussia has a population of roughly 3 million. Of these, 75% are Germans and of these Germans most are East Prussians (50% of the population) while the rest are Silesian and ex Moravian Germans (25% of the population). These latter two have identified more as Prussian or just regular German as time went on, but Silesian Germans have in fact made a lasting impact on Prussian culture and still contribute many local festivities and food to everyday life. There are also populations in the tens of thousands that are former East Germans and Jewish Germans. A lot of these East Germans are related to the 20 thousand Stasi, NVA and Volksmarine that fled to the country to keep their ranks and avoid prosecution when the wall came down. The fact that Prussia lets some Stasi criminals roam free has attracted some criticism.

Prussians actually only make up half the population in Kongisberg and rather mostly live outside the city, the other 400 thousand in Kongisberg being other Germans, Slavs and the Armenian/Syrian/Kurd population. Prussians are undoubtedly the full majority in small towns, villages, Sovetsk and Allenstein however, but you can find tens of thousands of Silesians and Moravians in these cities respectively. Prussians had a high birth rate in the cold war to rebuild Prussian influence in the region, being rewarded by Soviet programs for families in an ironically similar way to how Nazis rewarded women for bearing lots of children.

Prussians are typically seen as the feisty and boisterous ones in Prussia who stress being there first, Moravian Germans are seen as more artsy and cultured which annoys them as that's a Bohemian stereotype, Jewish Prussians are seen as nerdy, but loyal, Silesian Germans are the moral ones who can endure any hardship and the ex east Germans are seen as a little complainy and suspicious of everything, but ultimately with good intentions.

Prussians in Prussia are insistent to be called Prussians and not East Prussians since they are the only remnant of the Prussian state. Due to some Balitifcation and Russification, Prussians aren't too bothered on identifying as Germans but they will note that it's their ethnicity. Traditional Prussian culture is dominant and celebrated, and Low Prussian rather than standard German is official language. This may cause confusion with Prussians visit Germans/Austrians/Swiss etc. and was frequently a source of confusion for rambling Prussian and ex East German generals during the Baltic war.

The 3 tenets of the Low Prussian Language that distinguish it from German are:

1. Baltic loan words, such as Zuris for cheese instead of Kase, coming from the Lithuanian word for cheese Suris. This is currently not the case for younger Prussians however, who may use the standard German or English word instead of a Baltic one.

2. The presence of only a normative and accusative case, which was tricky to implement given how many cases there are in Germanic languages, but it worked out eventually and simplified the language.

3. Standardization of verb endings in all tenses, with no special words that have a changed spelling anymore. For example, in German you would say:

Du spielst for "you play", with the ending of spielen to have an "st" instead of an "en". Meanwhile, you would say Du findest for "you find" as an irregular where you keep the "e" from "finden".

In Low Prussian, you would only say "Du findst", which follows the conventional drop the "en" rule for word endings.

A forth rule existed wherein Low Prussian would be written in Cyrillic, but this was short lived as strikes in the 1970s by educators convinced the Soviets to let the Prussians write Low Prussian in standard Latin.

-

Besides Low Prussian, as the Russian minority is obviously the most visible in Prussia, most Prussians will also know Russian in addition English.

10% of the population is Russian. 5% are East Slavic (Belorussian and Ukrainian mix). 3% are Syrian Alawites that are either of pure Arab or Kurdish background, their arrival owing to the friendly relations Prussia has with the Batista regime in Syria. 1% are Armenian, 3% are Polish who live in the South and 3% are Lithuanian who live in the North East near Memel.

Prussians and Russians also mixed cultures so much to the point where if you run into a guy with a Slavic first name, they are really German and if you run into a guy a with a German first name, they are really Slavic.

-

The Alawite population in Prussia is expected to slightly grow due to families inviting in refugees during the Syrian civil conflict (provided they pass Prussia's background checks), while the number of Sunnis is expected to shrink as Syrians in Prussia claim that the Sunni minority harbors intrinsic radical and anti Baathist sentiment. The Sunni population however is in the few hundreds and is seen as negligible, for now. That said, Sunnis in Europe during the refugee crisis have avoided Prussia due to Prussia being overtly pro Assad.

In terms of religion as a matter of fact, Prussia here shows its authoritarian side. Prussia has banned certain religions like Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologists, Salafi/Wahabbi Islam and certain pagan groups for alleged subversive activity. Most Prussians regardless are secular, but most identify as Lutheran with a large Orthodox and Catholic minority due to Slavic and Lithuanian populations.

Because of the Slavic and Orthodox crossover, Prussians also celebrate the New Years holiday Russian style and also observe Christmas on Jan 6, but some Prussians claim this is just an excuse to make them lazy.

-
Other examples of authoritarianism in Prussia affecting demographics besides religion bans include a draft with high consequences for failing to attend and the harassment of opposition until they are exiled. Furthermore, Prussia's demographics are key to the ONLY 5 legal political parties in Prussia (formations of others are banned in a widely criticized policy.)
-

Political parties in Prussia are not just tied to political and economic views, but rather the direction Prussia should take in the world, and every demographic has its own idea. From far left to far right, these parties are:

The Communist Party (red, for obvious reasons): They tend to receive roughly 15% of the vote in Prussian parliamentary elections, and it is no surprise that it corresponds to the percentage of Slavs in Prussia as the Communist Party in Prussia is made up of ex Soviet politicians and their successors with a Pro Russia platform. The Communist party prides itself not only on the Soviet economic model, but also on East Slavic minority rights with a pro Putin stance on international relations while being anti NATO and EU. It has lost a bit of the Ukrainian vote due to supporting CIS loyalists in the Ukraine conflict (relegated to the west and only over in a few months), but has secured the vote from the former East Germans and on the fence Russian/Belorussian voters. In reality though, this party's only role is to form the occasional coalition government with the Prussian Progressive Party to get seats in parliament, and that brings us to:

The Prussian Progressive Party (black and white, copying flag colors): Also known as P3 or PX3, this is currently the party that has been in power since 1995 to the point where one can easily assert that Prussia is still a single party state. PX3 gets gets around 35-40% of the Prussian vote, mostly from industrial working class living in Kaliningrad, larger towns and the army. PX3 calls itself a democratic socialist party, but is characterized to be more pragmatist or even Bismarckian due to its willingness to adopt a variety of economic and social platforms to steal the vote. The Progressives are consistently pro free trade in Konigsberg, pro labor unionization, a strong military, secularism, and support a welfare state to attract a populist vote. Unlike the Communists however, Prussia still supports a market economy with planning elements and while preferring to be friendly with Russia, vouches cooperation with the west as well despite being fiercely anti NATO and EU. It sees Prussia as being independent.

The Prussian Democrat Party (yellow, color of European liberalism): An almost literal transplant of American Democrats...IN PRUSSIA to the point where the basis of the party was to copy whatever Bill Clinton was doing. Gaining 10-15% of the vote in elections with support from students, local Lithuanians, and the professional middle class, the PDP tends to almost literally copy of America's democrat party. Policies are consistent with whatever the democrats are doing in America now, so the PDP advocates secularism, social liberalism, free trade, environmentalism, demilitarization and minor welfare programs. The PDP is definitely pro EU and on the fence about Prussia joining NATO, seeing that Prussia must shed its communist past and reform is authoritarian practices so it may join the west. Its clashes with PX3 are not just to its pro west/EU stance, but mostly on the military budget which PX3 refuses to raise or lower, Prussia's retaining of a planned economy and PX3 hijacking its social liberal platforms whenever public opinion shifts.

The Prussian Republican Party (blue, color of European conservatism): Prussia's version of the American Republican Party, although more Mitt Romney and John McCain rather than Trump or Cruz. This is the second largest party in Prussia, attracting around 30% of the vote, but never significantly more. The party tends to attract members of Prussia's agrarian societies and business owners as they would obviously wish for the party's platform of economic liberalization with no planned economy, even if it would mean a diminished welfare state. It also appeals heavily to the Lutherans and devout of Prussia, although PX3 swayed some of those votes by officially adopting Lutheranism as state religion. Like the American Republicans and PX3, PRP does not really want to compromise on Prussia's military, but have failed to truly swing the army vote although it has a significant representation there. PRP has also won the Polish vote by being overtly pro NATO, and on the fence regarding the EU, so pro west like PDP but for inverse reasons. PRP and PDP have failed to form coalitions in meaningful ways due to inevitable splits on the party' clashes on the military and the liberals favoring some degree of a welfare state even if both are pro west and anti central planning.

The Prussian National Party (orange, color of Christian democracy in Europe although the party is really nothing of the sort): The far right party in Prussia that sees Prussia as neither independent, nor pro west nor pro Russia, but rather pro German and advocates closer ties with other German countries in solidarity. It receives around 3% of the Prussian vote, from no clear German demographic with the idea that one in every 30 Prussians you take will have a secret PNP voter. Like other far right parties, the party is anti EU, but on the fence on NATO. It favors free immigration from other German nations, but is anti immigration in other cases, although it is actually focused on anti Russian immigration rather than anti Islam immigration due to Prussia's low Middle Eastern population. It is pro military like all the other parties (sans PDP of course) and like the Republicans, is fiercely pro market and capitalist. PNP's soft euroscepticism, support for NATO the UN and globalism however make it an enemy of PNP. The party is regularly harassed by the still existing Stasi of Prussia, using PNP's harassment of Russians and Jews as justification for lethal force. Despite the party's pro pan German position however, other Germans want nothing to do with them.

Friend Zone:

Prussia's main allies are:

CIS. Although the ruling PX3 part is pro independent Prussia, CIS is still the top  trade partner of Prussia. The two are militarily aligned and Russia still keeps its Baltic fleet near Konigsberg and the Prussian coast. Many CIS citizens (Russians, Ukrainians and Belorussians) live in Prussia quite fine and Russian is still taught in schools. Many Belorussians like to go to Prussia for vacation since the country is landlocked and in return, Prussia imports its tasty agriculture.

Germany. Although Prussian SSR and West Germany were enemies in the Cold War, the two have learned to get along quite well upon Germany's reunification and many Prussians have emigrated to Berlin and former East Prussians have returned after the fall of Communism. Prussia considers itself both the big brother and father of the modern German state in a playful manner given Bismarck's role, although Germans will jokingly point out they're just East Prussia, and not the whole package. Prussians and Germans can visit each other freely and the two have lots of favorable trade deals with each other.

Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. Both from their Communist days and the fact that Prussia also buys weapons from them. East Prussia has quite a few expats working in both countries and it certainly helps in the Czech case that Prussia has a massive ex Moravian German population.

Estonia: Although Prussia had spooked Estonia into joining NATO, Estonia was still neutral despite providing aid to the other two Baltic nations and helped mediated a surrender that Prussia could not feel humiliated by.

Syria. Prussia has been an ally of Baathist Syria since Soviet days and has been the loudest Assad supporter in Europe besides Russia.

Iraq and Egypt. Prussia had helped squashed Islamist revolts here with their Stasi and Sand troopers, so there is some lingering friendship.

China/Armenia/Vietnam/Cuba. Prussia's ex Communist allies. Not close, but allies.

Kurdistan. If only to prop up Communists and piss off Turkey.

Finland. A friendly trade partner even if they wish that Prussia would apologize for Stasi spying in the cold war.

On the fence:

India and Pakistan. Is neutral to the two's conflict and has provided Stasi personnel to train police forces to hunt down terrorists.

Poland. Prussians frequently visit the Polish city of Danzig for cultural exchanges, but the two are still rather suspicious about each other given Prussia's rocky historical relationship with Poland and its pro Russia attitude. Poles that live in the south of Prussia are allowed to become automatic Polish citizens.

Lebanon. Prussia had not so secretly interfered in the civil war on a pro Syria side, so it has enemies and admirers here.

Sweden/Latvia/Lithuania: They are mad at Prussia for former aggression, but are rebuilding relations. Like with Estonia, Prussia has free trade deals and movement in the other two Baltic nations and Prussia has reached out to Sweden in favorable trade deals. Prussians do enjoy going to Sweden and have improved their image there.

Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria are like Poland, meh due to Russian alignment, but still okay.

USA and UK. Wish Prussia would be less authoritarian and aggressive, but commend it on "behaving".

Enemies or people they don't like:

Austria, due to a historical friction between Prussians and Austrians since the Holy Roman Empire days. They're seen as competitors for German affection and are the but of each other's jokes. They aren't actual enemies of course.

Luxembourg, France, Belgium and Netherlands, due to historical friction Prussia once more even though modern Prussia is just the east.

Denmark, because of the Schlesweig war and Prussian activities in the Baltic even though Prussia doesn't even control the former or even dominate the latter.

Albania and Kosovo. Prussia's pro Yugoslav attitude during the Yugoslav wars.

Some Slovakian due to Prussia supporting pro Czech forces in Slovakia in Czechoslovakia's final years.

The Gulf and Turkey. Prussian Sand trooper and Stasi interventions in these nations to propagate Soviet interests. What more to say? Prussia has claimed that it will refuse to be pro west if it continues to have ties with these countries, but is shut up by the fact that Prussia wouldn't join the west over Russia anyway.

All Islamic terrorists. Duh.
